You Know Great Work When You See It

Two summers ago, I was cruising across Lake James when something along the shoreline caught my eye.
Now, I’ve spent thousands of hours on this lake over the years. I’ve seen just about every style of waterfront home, seawall, pathway, patio, and landscaping project imaginable. Most of it blends into the scenery after a while.
This didn’t.
As I eased the boat a little closer, I found myself studying the stonework climbing naturally up from the shoreline. The retaining walls looked as though they had always been there. The pathways seemed to follow the contours of the land instead of fighting against them. Everything fit together so naturally that it felt less like landscaping and more like part of the mountain itself.
I remember thinking to myself, “I bet Appalachian Naturescapes built that.”
A few days later, I found out I was right.
When you spend enough time around Lake James, you begin to recognize exceptional craftsmanship. The best projects have a signature to them, even when there isn’t a sign in the yard. Carl Meyers and his team at Appalachian Naturescapes have developed that kind of reputation.
In this video, I talk about what makes their work stand apart and why so many property owners around Lake James trust them with some of the most important outdoor spaces on their properties.
What impresses me most is their ability to work with the land rather than against it. Whether it is a lakeside gathering area, a natural stone staircase, a retaining wall, a waterfall, or an entire outdoor living environment, their projects feel authentic to the mountains of Western North Carolina.
That is not easy to accomplish.
The temptation in construction is often to impose your vision on the landscape. Appalachian Naturescapes takes a different approach. They seem to start by listening to the property itself. The result is work that feels timeless.
Lake James is one of the most beautiful lakes in North Carolina. The surrounding mountains, clear water, and natural shoreline create a setting that deserves thoughtful stewardship. Companies like Appalachian Naturescapes help preserve and enhance that beauty while creating spaces where families can gather, entertain, and make memories for generations.
Take a few minutes to watch the video. I think you’ll understand why I recognized their work from a boat long before I knew who built it.
As Fletcher Edens and I often tell clients, buying a property at Lake James is only the beginning of the story. The memories are made in the spaces where friends gather, children play, and families spend time together. Carl Meyers and his team have helped create many of those special places around the lake.
If you are considering buying or selling property at Lake James, Fletcher and I would be honored to help.
