Building More Than Landscapes: A Conversation with Carl Meyers of Appalachian Naturescapes

Every once in a while you meet someone whose work speaks long before they do.

That is certainly true of Carl Meyers.

For years, I have admired some of the most beautiful outdoor spaces around Lake James without always knowing who created them. Then a pattern started to emerge. The natural stonework. The thoughtful design. The way a project seemed to belong exactly where it was built.

Time after time, the answer was the same.

Appalachian Naturescapes.

In this video, I sit down with Carl to talk about his company, his approach to landscaping and hardscaping, and what it takes to create outdoor spaces that complement the natural beauty of Lake James and the mountains of Western North Carolina.

One of the things I appreciate most about Carl is that he understands something many people overlook. Great landscaping is not about moving nature out of the way. It is about working with it.

The shoreline of Lake James is not a blank canvas. Every property has its own personality. The slope of the land, the existing trees, the rock formations, the lake views, and even the way the afternoon sun moves across the property all influence the final result.

Carl and his team have a remarkable ability to see what a property can become while respecting what makes it special in the first place.

As Fletcher Edens and I spend our days helping clients buy and sell property around the lake, we often see the difference that exceptional outdoor living spaces can make. A beautiful home is important, but it is often the outdoor spaces where memories are made.

It is where grandkids roast marshmallows.

It is where friends gather after a day on the water.

It is where families sit quietly and watch the sun disappear behind the Blue Ridge Mountains.

The best outdoor spaces become part of the family story.

That is why I wanted to spend some time talking with Carl. His work has helped shape many of those stories around Lake James.

Whether you are considering a lakeside gathering area, a retaining wall, natural stone pathways, a waterfall, shoreline improvements, or a complete outdoor living environment, I think you will enjoy hearing Carl’s perspective on craftsmanship, design, and what makes Western North Carolina such a special place to live.

Take a few minutes to watch our conversation. If you love Lake James, beautiful outdoor spaces, and the people who help bring them to life, I think you will find it time well spent.

And if you are thinking about making Lake James your home, Fletcher and I would be honored to help.
