Does Lake James Have Public Access?
People ask this online all the time, usually right after they see a photo of Lake James that looks like it was airbrushed by angels.
Does Lake James have public access?
Yes. Lake James has four public boat ramps owned by Duke Energy, and they are free. Some even have bathrooms, which is the kind of detail you do not fully appreciate until you have fully needed it.
Two of the ramps are part of Lake James State Park access areas leased from Duke Energy, and the other two are managed cooperatively with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission. (Burke County Tourism)
Below are the four public access points, with addresses and simple directions.
1) Black Bear Boat Access Ramp
Address: 6114 Lake James Road, Marion, NC 28752 (Destination McDowell)
Directions: From US 221, turn onto Business 221, then take an immediate left onto Hankins Road. Stay on Hankins until it ends at Lake James Road. Turn left, then follow signs for Black Bear Boat Access Ramp. (Destination McDowell)
This one is the answer when someone says, I want to launch on Lake James and I also want the directions to be written by a person who has actually driven there.
2) Linville Boat Access Area
Address: 5469 NC 126, Nebo, NC 28761 (BoatLaunchMap)
Directions: Take NC 126 toward Nebo and follow NC 126 along the lake. The Linville access is on NC 126 near the Linville River side of Lake James. (Carolina Sportsman)
This access is a favorite for folks who like their lake day with a side of river scenery and the feeling that you might be in a movie, which around here is not entirely impossible.
3) Hidden Cove Boat Ramp
Address: 3381 N.C. 126, Nebo, NC 28761 (North Carolina State Parks)
Directions: Drive NC 126 toward Lake James State Park and continue on NC 126 until you see signage for Hidden Cove Boat Ramp. (North Carolina State Parks)
Note for planners and people who keep calendars: the state park posts seasonal operating notes for this area, so check current hours if you are arriving outside peak season. (North Carolina State Parks)
4) Canal Bridge Boat Ramp
Address: 9182 N.C. 126, Nebo, NC 28761 (North Carolina State Parks)
Directions: Follow NC 126 along the lake toward the Canal Bridge area. The Canal Bridge Boat Ramp is clearly marked and sits right off NC 126. (North Carolina State Parks)
This one is well loved because it is straightforward, and also because some of us enjoy getting on the water early enough to watch the lake wake up and to beat the Saturday crowd.
Quick reminders before you launch
- These are public ramps, owned by Duke Energy, and they are widely used by locals and visitors. (Burke County Tourism)
- Parking and amenities vary by location, but yes, some have bathrooms, which makes Lake James feel like it is run by thoughtful grownups.
